Bluprnt Design System

Overview

Bluebeam is an innovative tech company that produces software solutions for the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. The company website supports multiple teams and initiatives involved in educating, selling, and supporting their products. However, over the years, the website has been frequently updated and reworked to keep up with the company's growing needs. This has led to a lack of brand consistency, complicated processes, communication breakdowns between teams, and slower delivery times due to repetitive solutions.

Process

Goals
The objective was to create a cohesive design system that could scale with our brand. This design system would encompass design guidance, code libraries, development best practices, and documentation to ensure a consistent user experience for our customers.
My Role
As the lead designer, I spearheaded the update of our design system through a series of discovery, audit, workshop, and design sprint sessions. Along with updating the visual elements, I also redefined our web hand-off process, working closely with the web developers and UX designer to ensure clear communication between the design and development teams.

To start, I audited all existing design systems and resources across the company, evaluating redundant components and outdated designs. Next, I worked with the web development team and UX designer to establish an efficient design and development process. Along with creating design prototypes, producing documentation, and supervising the final implementation of the design system, I collaborated closely with stakeholders to ensure alignment with the company's goals and objectives.

The Challenge
The sheer scope of the effort posed a significant challenge. Teams often worked in silos, resulting in conflicting or duplicate solutions. We strove to break down these silos by adopting an inclusive process and providing transparency. To build trust, we involved stakeholders in the process, who then became champions of the design system.

Results

The Bluprnt design system has successfully established a shared language across design, development, and various company stakeholders. With a common language in place, consistency has been maintained throughout the website. Leveraging the design system as our essential building blocks, we have streamlined the decision-making process, resulting in a reduction of design and development time. This has opened up the team's bandwidth, allowing us to focus on priority projects that are more aligned with the company's goals.
